LOVE WORKS DAILY 01/26/07 - Einstein Redux
FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
(Brand New and Classic Love Works Essays 2001-2007)
Part of today's LOVE WORKS was written by an unknown author.
One of those "send around the internet" kinds of things
that no one really know who wrote it or how it started..or
frankly whether it's even true...but it's good enough
that it keeps making the rounds.
One of the reasons that I'm sharing this story is that
it illustrates an important point to me.
Men of Science need not be Men without God or a spiritual
side. Albert Einstein was one of those people. He never,
in all his wonderous discoveries, ever concluded that there
was "No God". He couldn't exactly describe GOD, but
he found there was no evidence to concretely disprove God's
existence. He could not find any evidence that
PROVED the existence of GOD concretely either, but to Einstein,
the lack of solid evidence for OR against something DID NOT
MEAN that it was not true...it simply meant there
was no solid evidence for or against it...YET.
Finally, before I share the story, men of science often
use "I don't know" as the beginning of scientific quests...not
the end point. Men of faith...often use "I don't know" as
one of the strongest proofs of their faith. The "I don't know"
is the ultimate way to have faith and trust in a higher
intelligence.
Einstein was not afraid of "I don't know". As a matter of
fact, given any understanding of the complexity and vastness
of infinity, men of science and faith WOULD HAVE TO CONCLUDE,
that no matter how much you know, the amount you DO NOT
know is even greater.
Einstein was one of those people. And although as a avid
student of philosophy, I still see holes in the argument made
below...and it's logic...In the end it leaves you even more
"I Don't Knows"...which for me..is just fine.
A University professor at a well-known institution
of higher learning challenged his students with
this question.
"Did God create everything that exists?"
A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!"
"God created everything?" The professor asked.
"Yes sir, he certainly did," the student replied.
The professor answered, "If God created everything;
then God created evil. And, since evil exists,
and according to the principal that our works
define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."
The student became quiet and did not answer
the professor's hypothetical definition.
The professor, quite pleased with himself,
boasted to the students that he had proven
once more that the Christian faith was a myth.
Another student raised his hand and said,
"May I ask you a question, professor?"
"Of course", replied the professor.
The student stood up and asked, "Professor does cold exist?"
"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists.
Have you never been cold?"
The other students snickered at the young man's question.
The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist.
According to the laws of physics, what we consider
cold is in reality the absence of heat. Every body or
object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits
energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have
or transmit energy.
< B R> Absolute zero (-460F) is the total absence
of heat; and all matter becomes inert and incapable
of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist.
We have created this word to describe how we feel
if we have no heat."
The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?"
The professor responded, "Of course it does."
The student replied, "Once again you are wrong
sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness
is in reality the absence of light. Light we
can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can
use Newton's prism to break white light into many
colors and study the various wavelengths of each
color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray
of light can break into a world of darkness and
illuminate it. How can you know how dark a
certain space is?
You measure the amount of light present.
Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used
by man to describe what happens when there
is no light present."
Finally the young man asked the professor,
"Sir, does evil exist?"
Now uncertain, the professor responded,
"Of course, as I have already said. We see it everyday.
It is in the daily examples of man's inhumanity to man.
It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere
in the world. These manifestations are nothing else
but evil.
To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist,
sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself.
Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just
like darkness and cold, a word that man has
created to describe the absence of God.
*(God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what
happens when man does not have God's love present
in his heart.)
It's like the cold that comes when there
is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is
no light."
The professor sat down.
The young man's name -- Albert Einstein
Love In Thought! Love In Word! Love In Action!
Love To You Today!
*This section is not traditionally included in the argument
and appears to have been added at some point, but was included
in the email send to me so has been reprinted intact so
not to appear that I have altered the story sent me.
Most accounts that I have heard do no include the
marked section, and although there certainly appears to be
nothing wrong with it, Einstein himself, by all indication,
is unlikely to have spoken this part.)
"May we endeavor today to increase our understanding and appreciation of
what others have given and contributed to us. And develop constant,
mindful consideration of how our thoughts and actions will BENIFICIALLY
CONTRIBUTE to others"
The best to you today in discovering the answers to life's difficult
questions!
A Final Thought:
Love is always the right thing to do. Even if it isn't the easiest
thing to do.
May we have compassion for the struggles of others, wisdom to
acknowledge our own, and courage to address them both every day.
Respectfully,
Tim
