FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
(Brand New and Classic Love Works Essays 2001-2007)
Pip has got his Cock-a-Doodle back!
This morning when I was getting ready to take the kids
to school I heard it.
"Cock-A-Doodle-Do!"
He has been completely quiet for three days now after
a hawk tried to attack his flock and he came to their
rescue, fighting the hawk until nearly the bitter end.
Pip is our rooster, by the way, in case this story seems
a bit odd.
Pip is about 5 inches tall, and is the smallest rooster
I have ever seen. And that is exactly the reason why
he still lives on our farm.
You see, we bought a batch of young chickens from another
local chicken farmer, and in the batch was a full grown
miniature rooster. He was much too old to be with the young
hens (though he really wanted to be!) so we seperated
him out and lived alone for 3-4 months.
Finally, one day, he had had enough of that and decided
to jump into the main yard with all the loving hens and
friendly brother roosters that lived there.
Well...the main flock was NOT amused, and immediatly attacked
Pip and pulled out all his tail feathers and he tried to hid
in a corner.
We rescued him, and again he stayed alone and recovered for
about a month.
In that time, a couple of the younger chickens decided they would
hop out and join him. One was a hen, the other a young rooster.
They all seemed to get along, so when winter came we put them
together in a small chicken house, and they did fine for a couple
months.
Then one day, the other rooster had to go (details omitted but
you get the idea) so the young hen and Pip were integrated back
into the main flock. There was no other roosters at this point,
and it was a hopeful experiment that he would be able to
go back and be with the flock.
It worked. He stood his ground and defended himself when
others messed with him...he courted a few of the smaller
hens and left the others alone...and all was good.
That is...until last Saturday. The day the hawk came.
This would be the second time that Pip lost his Cock-A-Doodle.
(the first time being when he got his tail feathers and his
feeling hurt as I wrote earlier)
While the other hens cowered inside...Pip stood and fought
this invading "rooster" that stood at least 10 times his size.
The hawk just shredded him. Feathers flew everywere but
he still stood, and protected the hens.
It was his job after all. And he would go down fighting.
I didn't think that our warrior chicken Pip would survive...
but three days later...
He comes out of the hen house...
And for the first time since the incident...
A shaky but determined...
"Cock-A-Doodle-Doooo!"
Like I said, he had been very quite for the last three days...
I'm not sure if his confidence was shook, he was just too
tired, didn't want to draw attention to himself...or
just was in too much pain....but he stayed silent until this
morning.
Why to I relate this interesting, yet somehow Little Golden Book
story to you today?
I wonder...Have you ever lost your "Cock-A-Doodle"?
Have you ever tried really hard to succeed...to do the right
thing....do what you are supposed to do...
only to get yourself shredded and defeated?
I have. Quite a few times, as a matter of fact.
And I find myself having my "Cock-A-Doodle" quietted
for a time. Sometimes a long time.
It's really hard to deal with the pain, and upset, and
humiliation of losing...when you try so hard. So often.
And I find myself silent...hiding out waiting for my
wounds to heal.
But you know what....Pip didn't lose!
All the hens were unharmed. He did his job...and was willing
to die to do it.
It wasn't his fault that he is only 5 inches tall. He was
born that way, and most days he's darn proud of it.
I'm not sure if after only three days I could get my
"cock-A-Doodle" back. Not after physically being torn
apart and being so badly bruised and beaten.
But maybe in the back of his ever so small chicken brain he
thinks..."Hey, I survived. I'm still here. I'm doing what
I think I am supposed to do to the best of my ability, and I
would fight another day cause I love my hens so much"
Nah....probably not......
But that might be the lesson for us when we get the
"Cock-A-Doodle" knocked out of us.
Get up in the morning!
I'm here!
I've survived!
I'm doing what I think I am supposed to do to the best
of my ability and I am ready to fight another day...
Cause..."LOVE WORKS...and LOVE IS WORTH IT!"
"Cock-A-Doodle Doooooooo"

A Final Thought:
Love is always the right thing to do. Even if it isn't the easiest
thing to do.
May we have compassion for the struggles of others, wisdom to
acknowledge our own, and courage to address them both every day.
Respectfully,
Tim
